Magnesium
Choose the form for your task — citrate, glycinate, oxide, L-threonate
Magnesium is a key mineral for muscle function, the nervous system, and energy metabolism. But there are dozens of “magnesiums” on the shelves, and the main difference between them is the form of the compound : it affects tolerability, solubility, and how comfortable you will be taking the supplement.
This category includes different forms of magnesium: magnesium citrate , magnesium glycinate (bisglycinate) , magnesium oxide , and magnesium L-threonate . Below is a brief comparison and tips on how to choose “your” option.

How to choose magnesium: a quick tip
- You need a “universal” magnesium → they often start with citrate .
- Focus on sleep/ sensitive stomach/want the most gentle → usually choose glycinate (bisglycinate) .
- Need a budget option → oxide . Good if you have high/normal stomach acidity.
- Focus on sleep/cognitive performance → L-threonate . The only one that can cross the blood-brain barrier.
How to take magnesium (general recommendations)
- Follow the recommendations on the label . If necessary, it is often convenient to divide the daily dose into 2 doses.
- If you experience stomach discomfort, try taking it after meals and/or switching to a milder form.
- Medication intervals: magnesium can reduce the absorption of some medications (antibiotics, thyroid hormones, etc.) - space out the doses.
- If you have kidney disease, are pregnant/lactating, or are taking prescription medications, consult your doctor .
FAQ
Which magnesium is best absorbed?
More soluble forms (e.g. citrate) and “softer” chelates (e.g. glycinate) usually perform better. However, tolerability and results vary from person to person.
Why does magnesium oxide sometimes feel “fast”?
The oxide contains a lot of elemental magnesium, and can also affect the gastrointestinal tract - in some people this is subjectively felt as a quick effect. If the acidity is high, it can quickly turn into soluble magnesium chloride.
Is it possible to combine different shapes?
Yes, sometimes forms are combined to balance portability and cost — the main thing is not to exceed the serving indicated on the product.
Dietary supplement. Not a medicinal product. Individual sensitivity is possible.
