What Are Adaptogens and How Do They Work
Adaptogens are a group of plants and mushrooms traditionally used to support the body’s ability to adapt to physical, mental, and emotional workloads. Unlike regular stimulants, plant adaptogens work gently: they do not “push” the nervous system but help support internal balance and overall tone.
That is why adaptogens are often chosen during periods of intensive work and study, while preparing for competitions, in the off-season, and at times when it is important to maintain productivity and clarity of thinking. Most adaptogens do not reveal themselves instantly, but during course use — regularity is more important here than a single dose.
The best-known adaptogens include ginseng, rhodiola rosea, ashwagandha, eleutherococcus, and Chinese schisandra, as well as mushroom adaptogens — cordyceps, reishi, and lion’s mane.
Plant Adaptogens — From Ginseng to Schisandra
This section includes classic plant adaptogens. Each has its own specifics, so it is convenient to choose according to a specific goal — tone, endurance, concentration support, or recovery after exertion.
Ginseng (Panax ginseng). One of the best-known adaptogens, traditionally used to support vital tone, physical endurance, and productivity in an active rhythm. In the catalog, it is available as a strong extract in capsules and as a liquid extract.
Rhodiola rosea (golden root). An adaptogen often chosen for mental and physical workloads — to support endurance and resistance to stress factors. Rhodiola belongs to the most studied adaptogens alongside ashwagandha: its standardized extracts (for example, SHR-5) have been studied in clinical works, and more recently — also in the context of anaerobic productivity and cognitive functions in trained athletes. Available in capsules and as a liquid extract (spray).
Ashwagandha (Indian ginseng, Withania somnifera). One of the most popular and best-studied adaptogens today. It is traditionally taken during tense periods to support stress resistance and comfortable well-being. Ashwagandha has a solid evidence base: the effects of root extract in the context of stress have been studied in a number of randomized double-blind placebo-controlled human studies (including standardized extracts such as KSM-66). In the catalog, it is available in capsules and as a 1:10 root extract in tablets.
Eleutherococcus (Siberian ginseng). An adaptogen for supporting tone and productivity, traditionally valued during periods of increased workloads. Available in tablets and as a liquid extract.
Chinese schisandra (schisandra). An adaptogen chosen to support tone, concentration, and productivity. In the catalog — in capsules and as a sublingual liquid extract for quick and convenient intake.
Leuzea (Leuzea carthamoides). A plant adaptogen popular in the fitness environment for supporting tone and focus during a training routine. Available as a liquid extract.
Ecdysterone. A natural phyto-steroid — a plant steroid compound found in spinach, quinoa, and leuzea (Rhaponticum carthamoides). Unlike synthetic anabolic steroids, ecdysterone works through a different mechanism associated with the estrogen receptor beta, not with androgenic stimulation. It is traditionally valued in strength sports, and in scientific literature ecdysterone has been studied in connection with sports productivity, protein synthesis, and recovery after exertion — in particular in the work of researchers from Freie Universität Berlin (2019). This is one of the underestimated adaptogens: despite its long history of use, it receives less attention than ginseng or ashwagandha. Important: athletes competing under doping control should monitor the current status of the substance in the relevant anti-doping regulations.
Mushroom Adaptogens — Cordyceps, Reishi, Lion’s Mane
A separate and increasingly popular subgroup is mushroom adaptogens. These are functional mushrooms with standardized polysaccharide content, which are added to the diet to support tone, recovery, and overall well-being. Stark Pharm offers three key items.
Cordyceps (Cordyceps). A mushroom adaptogen traditionally associated with supporting physical endurance and energy. Convenient format — tablets with standardized extract for regular course intake.
Reishi (Ganoderma, Lingzhi). One of the best-known functional mushrooms. Reishi extract with standardized polysaccharide content is added to the diet as support for overall tone and well-being.
Lion’s Mane (lion’s mane, Hericium erinaceus). A mushroom chosen during periods of intensive mental work — to support concentration, clarity of thinking, and productivity. Available in tablets with standardized fruiting body extract.
Adaptogens for Sports, Energy, and Concentration
Adaptogens are convenient to select according to a specific use scenario. Below are the main goals for which they are most often chosen.
- For athletes and endurance: ginseng, eleutherococcus, ecdysterone, cordyceps — to support productivity and adaptation to physical workloads.
- For energy and against fatigue: ginseng, rhodiola, schisandra, leuzea — to make it easier to handle an intense rhythm and maintain tone.
- For concentration and productivity: lion’s mane, schisandra, rhodiola — focus support during study and mental work.
- For stress resistance: ashwagandha, rhodiola — during tense periods when it is important to maintain balance.
- For recovery after exertion: ecdysterone, cordyceps, reishi — as support during the recovery period.
Release Forms: Capsules, Tablets, Liquid Extracts
In the catalog, adaptogens are available in several formats — choose the one that is more convenient for your routine.
- Capsules and tablets — convenient for precise dosage and regular course intake (ginseng, ashwagandha, rhodiola, schisandra, cordyceps, reishi, lion’s mane, eleutherococcus).
- Liquid extracts and sprays — a compact format, convenient on the go; sublingual intake is simple and fast (rhodiola, schisandra, leuzea, eleutherococcus, ginseng).
- Toning complexes — this is when you want to combine several herbs in one product (Super Tonic — a complex of ginseng, rhodiola, schisandra, leuzea, and guarana).
