Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient that functions as an antioxidant and as a coenzyme in key reactions in the body. • Colds (URTI): In the general population, regular vitamin C supplementation (preferably ≥200 mg/day) does not reduce the incidence of colds, but it does reduce the duration of episodes by approximately 8% in adults and 14% in children. In subgroups with “extreme” exposure (marathon runners, skiers, military personnel in the cold), prophylactic supplementation reduced the risk of colds by approximately 50% . Also important: supplementation “after the onset of symptoms” in studies has generally had no significant effect on duration.
• Collagen and connective tissue: EFSA confirmed a cause and effect relationship between vitamin C consumption and normal collagen formation (for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin, teeth, etc.).
