Boswellia extract is a highly concentrated herbal supplement with powerful anti-inflammatory properties, used primarily to support joint health and reduce pain associated with inflammation.

Boswellia serrata, also known as Indian frankincense, is a tree native to the mountainous regions of India. The active ingredient is an aromatic gum resin that is collected from cuts in the bark of the tree. This resin contains biologically active components called boswellic acids, the most potent of which is considered to be AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid).

1. Osteoarthritis

Research: Sengupta K, et al. A double blind, randomized, placebo controlled study of the efficacy and safety of 5-Loxin® for treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee. (Arthritis Research & Therapy, 2008).

Description: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study (gold standard of evidence). 75 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee participated. Duration — 90 days.

Dosage: Doses of 100 mg and 250 mg of the enriched extract per day have been used.

Results: The extract group showed statistically significant reductions in pain and improvements in physical function compared to placebo. Positive effects were observed after just 7 days of treatment.

2. Rheumatoid arthritis

Research: Chopra A, et al. A randomized double blind trial of a herbal preparation in rheumatoid arthritis. (Journal of Rheumatology, 2004).

Description: Randomized, double-blind study. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Dosage: A complex herbal preparation was used, where boswellia extract was the key component.

Results: There was a significant reduction in joint swelling, pain, and morning stiffness, as well as an improvement in grip strength compared to the placebo group.

3. Inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis)

Research: Gupta I, et al. Effects of Boswellia serrata gum resin in patients with ulcerative colitis. (European Journal of Medical Research, 2001).

Description: Randomized controlled trial in 31 patients. Boswellia extract efficacy was compared with standard drug (sulfasalazine). Duration — 6 weeks.

Dosage: 350 mg of extract three times a day.

Results: 82% of patients in the boswellia group achieved remission, compared to 75% in the sulfasalazine group. Boswellia showed similar efficacy to the drug with fewer side effects.
